The Premier’s Science Fellowship Program (Fellowship Program) aims to attract Premier's Science Fellows (distinguished researchers and leaders of international prominence) and Premier's Early to Mid-Career (EMC) Fellows (supporting EMC researchers) to Western Australia.
The intention is that each round of the Fellowship Program will appoint a Premier's Science Fellow and a Premier's EMC Fellow in an area of need/opportunity (Area of Research) within a different State Government science priority area or that cuts across State Government science priority areas, subject to the availability of funding.
Appointed Fellows will be expected to increase Western Australia’s capabilities and capacities in the Area of Research; deliver benefits and opportunities to the State; improve collaboration; enhance engagement with industry and other end-users; attract research funding; and be ambassadors for science in Western Australia, including for the general public.
2018 Round now open
The department is now accepting applications for the 2018 Round of the Fellowship Program for a package of a Premier's Science Fellow and a Premier's EMC Fellow to address the following Area of Research in Western Australia:
Automation; robotics; artificial intelligence; and/or machine learning.
Applications must be submitted by one or more eligible Host Organisations based in Western Australia. Two or more Host Organisations for each application is desirable, but not essential.
Western Australia has existing strengths in the Area of Research and associated applications, particularly in the resources and energy industries. These include autonomous haulage trucks operating in mines in the State's north and Rio Tinto's AutoHaul project, which will deliver the world's first fully autonomous, long-distance heavy haul rail network.
The 2018 Round offers the opportunity for Western Australia to build on the Area of Research and associated applications related to the resources and energy industries, and/or to grow the Area of Research and associated applications in other sectors, such as the agricultural and space industries.
The State Government funding available through the 2018 Round is $1 million over four years to support the Premier's Science Fellow and $0.5 million over four years to support the Premier's EMC Fellow. The State Government funding to support each Fellow must be matched by committed cash co-investment (from the Host Organisation(s)/other sources) at a minimum 1:1 ratio.
Submission instructions and guidance notes for completion of the application form are contained within the form.
The electronic copy of the completed application form (Parts A and B) and all requested supporting documentation, signed as required in the form, must be submitted by 3.00 pm (AWST) on Thursday 28 February 2019. Late or incomplete applications will not be accepted.
